Jonathan berates ASUU’s actions, says Union took extreme position on strike

President Goodluck Jonathan has regretted that ASUU has taken an extreme position on the issue of the strike, refusing deliberately to follow laid down negotiating process for settling trade disputes.

The President also noted that the ultimatum given by the Supervising Minister of Education was the position of the Committee of Vice Chancellors. He said the Minister only re-echoed that position as it did not emanate from the government originally.
Fielding questions from newsmen at the expanded caucus meeting of the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party held at Government House, Yenagoa, the President said, the Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision of the Committee of Vice Chancellors.

Learn 6 ways to improving your reading habit

I am pretty aware of your reading problems, and I know it started by reading only headline and not caring to read the whole article. And before you know it, you will abscond going through all I have to say here, yet you need a reading solution.

One of the things I hear regularly from people I advise is that they do not have the time to read.

This is usually a valid point particularly in the Nigerian environment. What with bills to pay, crazy work schedules, the gnarling traffic to and from work, kids to take care of and the one million things we need to do everyday. Yet with enough time to practically WASTE pressing your blackberry (or other) mobile phones.

However, it is a scientific fact that reading stimulates certain parts of the brain and affects your cognitive function. The act of reading a book whether for knowledge, leisure or entertainment is like exercise for the brain. It flexes the brain muscles and leads to a more enlightened, sharper and all round better person.

Essentially, when you don’t read, you’re admitting that you are not the best person you can be; a faded copy.

To bring you back to your colourful best, here are 6 tips on how to improve reading habits.

#1: Make time: Despite all the valid reasons you have for not reading, you have no reason to accept to ‘grow old before your time’. This is a popular saying and it means life taking it’s toll on you without you fighting back.

#2: Create A Book List: It is inevitable that you will hear about certain books that you would like read. Unfortunately, these books may not be readily available when you want them or you may not have enough funds to purchase them and since the mind is prone to instant gratification, it is likely that you will forget about such books. I suggest that you create a list of books you would like to read on a monthly basis. Keep adding to your list and cross out the ones you’ve bought or read.

#3: Find a quiet place & dream: We all need to find a quiet place to go to each day where we can meditate and renew our minds. Dream about the places you would like to go to, read about those places. Dream, dream, dream! Everything in life is created twice; first in your mind and then in the physical reality. Read books that feed your dreams.

#4: Read a variety of books: Don’t just pick up one genre of books; mix and match. Read fiction & non-fiction and vary them. Expand your view! You never know what you’ll get from a book. For instance, you may be a business person and in a book of science fiction, the author may be writing a fictional but important tip about the future of your line of business that will be of immense benefit to you.

#5: Visit a bookshop regularly: There are many good bookshops around. A bookshop is a place of discovery and a place where you can meet interesting people or those who share your peculiar taste!

#6: Expand your options: I personally read several books in several platforms. I hardly ever restrict myself anymore with only hard cover books. Get ready to lay hand on online books using your mobile phones and pads. Your blackberry is not just meant to PING, but to study. Apply it to use.

What Asuu Has Caused To Students: Two EBSU Female Students Stripped For Robbery In Calabar

TWO female undergraduate robbery suspects
and their male partner in crime were battered
and stripped naked in Calabar, Friday afternoon,
for attempting to rob a businesswoman of N1.5
million. The three suspects operating in a Golf car were
accosted by a taxi driver at about 4pm along the
Murtala Muhammed Highway by the Cross River
State new secretariat, while their driver and one
other suspect escaped. The gang reportedly ambushed the
businesswoman who had gone to withdraw the
N1.5 million at a bank along Calabar Road, near
the Watt market, where they approached her to
join their cab and the woman who appeared
eager to arrive home because of the money she had withdrawn immediately accepted and
boarded the taxi. Trouble started as she got to her destination and
discovered that the taxi driver became unwilling
to allow her alight from the vehicle. The robbery
suspects were said to have brought out guns and
asked her to cooperate with them if she did not
want to get hurt. The victim told Vanguard, “The suspects told me
to cooperate with them and quietly hand over
the N1.5 million or I would be killed.” She said she
suddenly became “angry in the spirit because this
money is contribution money and my members
who want to share the money on Sunday so they could get their Christmas things early would not
believe me. So I was ready to die and began to
raise alarm in the vehicle and calling for help”. She said her shouts attracted the attention of a
taxi driver who decided to give the Golf car a hot
chase until he overtook and blocked the vehicle
at Atekong Drive”. The driver of the five-man gang and another
suspect escaped by quickly alighting from the car
and running across the highway and then
jumping the perimeter fence of the new
secretariat. She added, “These two ladies were
apprehended by the people who came to see what was the trouble between the two taxis.
They began to beat them when they heard what
they had done to me.” The suspects who were thoroughly beaten and
stripped were later handed over to police who
came to the scene. The ladies confessed that they
were students of Ebonyi State University and
members of a syndicate which left Abakaliki in
Ebonyi State to Aba in Abia State. When contacted, the Police Public Relations officer
of the State Police Command, Mr. Hoggan Bassey
confirmed that the three suspects were in police
custody, saying they would soon be charged to
court. His words, “nemesis has caught up with them.
They are being investigated and so far they have
confessed that they used to hang around bank
premises with their car, shouting one chance, one
chance and waiting for people coming out of the
bank with money. “The Cross River State police commissioner Shola
Shodipo has promised armed robbers, kidnappers
and other criminals a raw deal this Christmas
season. Cross River State is the most peaceful
state in Nigeria and we are prepared to
compromise the crime free status of the state.”

ASUU May End Strike On Today...Saturday

There are indications that the Academic Staff
Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria may end
its four-month old strike today Saturday,
November 16. About 120 chapters of the union have voted in
support of the decision to end the strike at their
various congresses held in their institutions. However, the National Executive of the body has
not ratified the decision to end the strike. A Pro-Chancellor of the University of Benin,
Senator Effiong Bob, urged ASUU to end the strike
in honour of Late Fetus Iyayi, a former president
of the union. Senator Bob, who was at the residence of the late
professor pointed out that Late Iyayi died while
trying to resolve the issue. “ASUU Should call of the strike so that both the
union members and students can come and give
him the last respect he deserves during his
funeral,” he said. Late Iyayi died on Tuesday, November 12, in an
auto crash on his way to Kano for a meeting of
the union. In a meeting with the leadership of the union,
President Goodluck Jonathan had agreed to
provide 1.1 trillion Naira (about 6.9 billion dollars)
in the next five years and the balance of 62
billion Naira (about 390 million dollars) and
allowance to each university. The union had embarked on a nationwide strike
on July 1 suspending all academic activities

Asuu Strike: Education Ministry Directs Varsities To Commence Re-opening Processes

Barely 48 hours after President Goodluck Jonathan engaged the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in a marathon 13-hour closed door meeting, in a bid to end the union’s four-month old strike,Voice Of Ansu gathered, yesterday, that officials of the Federal Ministry of Education have been directed to commence processes for the re-opening of federal universities.

Investigations revealed that governing councils and vice chancellors of the universities have been specifically directed, via direct communication from the National Universities Commission, NUC, to take immediate steps to ensure that their institutions are in the right position to receive students immediately the strike is called off.

Sources at the NUC said that the vice-chancellors were also directed to protect the interest of students and parents henceforth and ensure that no one takes advantage of the ugly situation.

Before the strike which commenced on July 1, almost all public universities were in their second semesters and had less than two months to conduct examinations. As the strike lingered, final year students in the universities had their hopes dashed for mobilization in the Batch C set of the compulsory National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, scheme.

According to officials of the NYSC, their counterparts in private universities have already resumed at their various camps last Tuesday. What this means is that, if eventually the strike is called-off, any time from now, public universities will have to re-adjust their 2012/2013 academic calendar to enable their final year students get mobilized for national service in the next batch, come February 2014.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Vice Chancellor one of the Federal Universities in the South-West, who craved anonymity, disclosed that his university is yet to receive any circular from the Ministry of Education on a specific date of resumption, but noted that the university is eager to resume as soon as possible.

He said: “I have not received any circular from the Ministry of Education on any specific date of resumption. When we get any, we will call back students to resume studies without delay, as we are eager to resume once the matter is resolved between ASUU and Federal Government.”

Asked what situation in the university has been like in the last four months, he said: “You can guess what has happened in the last four months. We have not functioned to 100 per cent capacity. Teaching and learning have been put on hold, but research and all other administrative functions have continued. Within the last four months, we have been sending and receiving proposals.”

Anambra remembers Achebe’s creativity in maiden literary festival

The Nigerian Book Foundation (NBF), a non-governmental, non-profit book development organisation with a commitment to indigenous book development, in conjunction with the Anambra State Government led by Governor Peter Obi, held its maiden Literary Festival at the Women Development Centre, Awka, Anambra State.

Convener of the festival and President of Nigerian Book Foundation, Professor Chukwuemeka Ike said the festival was part of activities lined up to immortalize the late literary icon, Prof. Chinua Achebe through the revival of literary creativity amongst Anambra people as NBF believes that books build the nation.

The event which was funded by Anambra State Government has as its highlight, speeches from different writers, parade of Anambra literary stars and presentation of books by different authors to Gov. Peter Obi.

Day One of the festival was essentially a strategy session, with speakers working around the theme, ‘Sustaining the Legacy of Literary Creativity’ in Anambra State. Key Note Address was by Prof. Alex Asigbo, Dean, Unizik Faculty of Arts. Papers were also presented by Prof. Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Prof. Rems Umeasiegbu and Dr. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh

The festival also featured traditional dances and acrobatics by Metu Memorial School, Onitsha, and Paul University Primary School, Awka.Exciting debates between Queen of the Rosary College, Onitsha and St. John of God Secondary School, Awka, showed that Anambra has tremendous youth potential waiting to be harnessed.

The second debate featuring Christ the King College, Onitsha, was hot, albeit one-sided since opponents DMGS failed to turn up.“Mock News in English (Unizik Primary School) and in Igbo, by Chidera Okoli of Community Secondary School, Ndikelionwu, kept the audience clapping as tomorrow’s broadcasters shone.

Distinguished Anambra writers including Eze Ndikelionwu, Eze Prof. Chukwuemeka Ike, Ikelionwu XI, Igwe Obosi HRH Chidubem Iweka, Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Peter Nself-servicewo, Chimalum Nself-servicewo, Odili Ojubuonu, Osita Ike, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, Rems Umeasiegbu, Obu Udeozo, Greg Mbajiorgu etc interacted with hundreds of school children in attendance each day at the Women Development Centre venue, of the well-received festival. They were all presented Certificates of Recognition as Anambra Literary Stars, by Gov. Peter Obi, who specially commended Eze Prof Ike for being an excellent, untiring role model and mentor to many people in the state and globally.

The event also had in attendance notable writer, Prof. Nwosu, Nollywood actor, Wasky Oguegbu, Rev. Father Joe Barth Abba among others.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, Nigeria’s first academic Senior Advocate of Nigeria said the festival had the capacity to revive the dwindling culture of reading among the people.

Governor Peter Obi in his speech extolled the creative qualities of Anambra people both at home and in the diaspora and urged for sustenance. He described Igwe Iweka as a rare personality who combines the leadership of his people with creativity and called on today’s writers to impact such creative excellence on the Anambra child, saying that the society we abuse today shall take revenge on us tomorrow.

He regretted that the society was suffering from misplaced values; hence, those who ordinarily should be regarded as dregs of society are seen as role models. He explained that this was part of the reason he made value re-orientation an integral part of his administration.

Obi said that for Anambra State to regain its greatness, conscious effort must be made to rediscover those that had made epochal contributions to the advancement of civilization in all sectors.

Obi recalled how he looked for people like Prof. Chike Obi and how the Government continued to assist them till they died.

Prof. Ike expressed hope that the person to succeed Gov. Peter Obi would continue offering support to literary creativity and ennobling activities as Obi was doing.

Nigeria wins U-17 World Cup! Go Nigeria!!!

So proud of our Golden Eaglets. They beat Mexico 3-0 this evening to win this year's U-17 World Cup. Go Nigeria

The strike of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has entered its fourth month, and lecturers of the government-owned universities will on Monday hold a referendum to make some decisions.

Local
chapters of the Union in each campus have
invited members for the crucial meeting during
which they will be briefed on the outcome of the
13-hour long meeting ASUU Executives had with
the President Goodluck Jonathan and other
officials of the Federal Government. The briefing will be followed by
voting in favour
or against the continuation of the strike. Though some members of the
union are still
sceptical about the promise of the government,
there are indications that the referendum will
favour ending the strike. According to a union member, referendum is
always conducted before a strike is embarked
upon or called off. The ASUU embarked on a strike to demand the
implementation of the 2009 agreement with
government on July 1.

What ASUU Has Done To Students

Infact I am annoyed: ASUU has made some Nigerian students to forget their Matriculation number including my girlfriend.I just asked her to send me her Matric No, Guess what!, She sent 7A0477B8 to me. it is a pitiable disma pisma, its regrettably lugubrious that BB PIN Now turns Matric Number. Nigerian Varsities To Open Next Week, With Or Without ASUU?

President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday, November 4, meet with the leadership of ASUU at the Presidential Villa.

An official of the Vice President’s office who pleaded anonymity told Scan News that all hands are now on deck to ensure that the Universities resume next week.

The President will at next Monday’s meeting present to the ASUU leadership the administration’s last concession for them to call off the prolonged strike.

A source at the Presidential Villa noted that if ASUU fails to call off, the Federal Government will then resort to plan B, which will be to compulsorily open the Universities, using the instrumentality of the governing councils and the school managements.

Already, most of the governing councils of the Universities have started meeting to work out modalities for the compulsory re-opening of the Universities should ASUU fail to honour the personal request of President Jonathan.

It was gathered that security report available to the Presidency may have necessitated this line of action to salvage the Universities system from the direction it is facing at present. So all students that are far are advised to come back and hang around
