amount to more than an empty rhetoric. "I laughed when I read Okorocha's comment about
his planned relocation to Awka. But what people
ought to ask is; what is Okorocha's political weight
even in Imo State where he is the governor?

Godwin Ezeemo, has defected to the Progressive
Peoples Alliance (PPA), claiming that the former
was not democratic enough. He told journalists in Awka on Saturday that he
decamped to PPA because APC, under which he
had nursed an ambition to contest for the state’s
governorship position, lacked internal democracy. Mr. Ezeemo, who spoke through Okey Nwoke, the
Publicity Secretary of his campaign organisation,
said that he defected from APC “because of the
high level of electoral malpractice at its primaries,
which produced Senator Chris Ngige as the
governorship candidate.’’ He alleged that APC failed to conduct the
gubernatorial primaries on the principles of equity
and fairness.
“The National leadership of APC had already made
up their mind on who would have the ticket; the
primary election was, therefore, a mere formality. APC lacked the internal structure to conduct the
primaries; so, they just selected their candidate. “Equal opportunities were not given to all the
aspirants; plans for the programme were vague to
other aspirants, while all required information was
given only to Sen. Ngige. I considered this as unfair
and I decided to leave for another party,’’ he said. Mr. Ezeemo stressed that it was illogical for APC,
which had been advocating fairness and the due
process, to turn around and become guilty of what
it had been preaching against.
He described PPA as a peace-loving party, adding
that he had decided to use its platform to accomplish his goals and vision for the
development of Anambra. He said that he had a
five-point agenda for the state’s development if
elected as governor in the November16 election.
The aspirant said that his priority areas of interest
included infrastructural development, security, education, health, rural transformation and
agriculture.
Efforts to get reactions from the state APC
headquarters over the alleged electoral malpractice
during its governorship primaries proved abortive.

Another policeman caught on video demanding N10,000 bribe
For the third time in the past two months,
another policeman has been caught on video
demanding a bribe of N10,000 from a motorist. The footage, secretly filmed by a passenger at the
back seat of a vehicle in Onitsha, Anambra State,
has so far received thousands of hits on
YouTube. The three-minute 18-second video
which first appeared on the YouTube channel of
one Tola Tim, has since become an Internet sensation. In the video, a policeman apprehended the driver
of a vehicle that was coming from Akure, Ondo
State to Umuahia, Abia State. The policeman sat in
the front seat with the driver, and after checking
the vehicle particulars, declared that he had
discovered some discrepancies between the documents and the chassis number. In the video, the policeman explained that the
number ‘0’ was the last number on the chassis
number inscribed on the vehicle, while number
‘3’was the last number on the documents
presented to him for perusal. The driver was seen arguing with the policeman
that he had asked him to veer off the road in
order to enable him (policeman) do proper
checking of the vehicle. Once the alleged
discrepancies were discovered, the policeman
insisted that he would collect N10,000 before he would release him. The driver’s appeal that there was an unintended
mix-up somewhere and that the vehicle was not
a stolen one fell on deaf ears. A nursing mother
who sat at the back also appealed to the
policeman. The man in uniform bellows, “Settle us. Just give
us N10,000 make I waka comot. Or is it too
much? If I knew you stole the vehicle, I won’t
collect money from you.” But the driver, on noticing the adamance of the
policeman, said he won’t give in to his demands. “It is three much! I want you to take me to your
station. I’m not afraid of anything. I can go back
to Akure. At worst, I will miss my appointment in
Umuahia. Why will I part with N10,000 on the
vehicle I didn’t steal? No sir! I can’t do that. “I will rather go back to Akure, get the
registration officer and other supporting
documents, come back with another vehicle and
clear myself. And that is to tell you that I have not
done something wrong,” the driver said. The unidentified driver also calmed the nerves of
the apprehensive nursing mother who clutched a
baby girl to herself. “My sister, don’t worry! At
worst, you will sleep in a hotel with your baby
when I go back to Akure,” the driver added. The policeman replied, “Eh eh. It is three much.

who was armed with a gun, ordered, “Driver,

adequately for their needs. Many police barracks
look like refuse dumps and they are expected to live there with their children.” But a YouTube user, Paul Saint, argued that there
is no excuse for being corrupt, attributing the
behaviour to greed. Saint stated, “This has nothing to do with the
service welfare of the police. Corruption in
Nigeria has nothing to do with low or high salary
pay. If you are corrupt, no matter what you earn,
you will still find ways to illegally enrich yourself.
Most cases of corruption recorded in this country are perpetrated by persons who are otherwise
fairlycomfortable with bribes. “Corruption is as a result of greed only. Not
poverty or low pay. We must condemn
corruption at all times and not make excuses for
it. But even if they are not well paid, there is no
excuse for corruption. The most corrupt persons
in Nigeria started off with collecting less than N10,000 and because we excuse them or
celebrate them, they step up their demands to
millions and billions. Well paid or not, do not
demand or collect bribe.” It will be recalled that three cops have so far been

Outrage at Yobe students killings
Political leaders, among them President
Goodluck Jonathan, condemned the weekend
killing of more than 40 students at the College
of Agriculture in Gujba, Yobe State by
suspected members of Boko Haram Sect. Speaking in a Presidential media chat,
Jonathan described the attack as a “transient
challenge.” He assured Nigerians that the government
would continue to do what was required to

Strike continues, says ASUU
University teachers said yesterday that their
strike will go on — 89 days after it began. This is in spite of the intervention by Vice
President Namadi Sambo in bringing the lecturers
back to the negotiation table. The teachers are seeking proper funding of
education and the payment of their N87 billion
earned allowances. These are part of the 2009 agreement between
the teachers and the government. The
government has offered N30 billion for the
earned allowances and made available
N100billion for projects on the campuses. The
lecturers rejected the offer. The strike has been on since July 1. The latest position of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU), the umbrella association of
the teachers to go on with the strike, was made
known yesterday by University of Lagos
(UNILAG) chapter Chairman Dr. Karo Ogbinika, in a
statement. According to him, ASUU last month pulled out of
the negotiation with the Federal Government,
which was represented by Benue State Governor
Gabriel Suswam, based on the government’s
insincerity and non-commitment. He said the Presidency intervened, calling for
another round of meetings with Vice President
Namadi Sambo last week which, according to
ASUU, also ended in a stalemate. The union said it was disappointed because it
hoped the Presidency’s intervention would
dampen the tension the strike had generated;
but, rather, the government was re-echoing the
same stance by Suswam, which was why ASUU
withdrew from the negotiation. ASUU said: “After the meeting on September 19
with the Vice-President, it is clear that the Federal
Government is merely paying lip service to
education in Nigeria and deceiving the public on
its commitment to its transformation agenda. “The Nigerian people should not be deceived.
How can there be a meaningful transformation
when the education sector is neglected and
gradually taken over by private entrepreneurs,
including government functionaries who are
busy bulding private universities with stolen funds in and outside Nigeria. Can these
universities be truly called private? “ASUU is assuring Nigerians that it will not back
out in its struggle to ensure that the government
is made to do what is right in the education
sector. This is a commitment that all members of
the union have vowed to pursue to its logical
conclusion.” The union said it had reported back to its various
zones many of which still insisted the strike must
continue.” Hundreds of students of Bayero University, Kano
(BUK) yesterday gave the Federal Government a
one week ultimatum to meet all the demands of
ASUU or face the wrath of students. The students, who staged a peaceful protest,
urged the Federal Government to respect and
implement the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement. Addressing the protesters at the BUK gate, the
university’s Students Union President, Sani
Ibrahim, said they were forced to stage the
protest, “because we are tired of staying at
home”. “Our mates in other countries are in
school; why should the case of Nigerian students be different?” “As part of the struggle to fight for our right is
being pursued, I will like to salute our students
for their patience while receiving the negative
consequences of bad governance. We believe
that the delay in resuming lectures in our
universities is not only lamentable but also devastating. We believe even more strongly that
now is the time to let our leaders know that
enough is enough and we shall wake up and say
‘no’ to injustice being meted out to Nigerian
students. “We also call on the government to review the
annual budget for the education sector from
eight per cent to 26 per cent, so as to ensure
adequate rehabilitation of infrastructure in our
universities, including hostels, laboratories,
potable water and constant supply of electricity. “We are calling on ASUU to give government
more opportunity to dialogue so as to quickly
resolve the differences in the best interest of
Nigerian students. We are giving ASUU and the
Federal Government one week to sort things out
and resume lectures; otherwise Nigerian students will look for other alternatives to fight for our
right. Education is our right and no one should
take it away from us,” Ibrahim noted. But for the intervention of the police, who
pleaded with the protesting students, they would
have taken to the streets. ASUU members at the Adekunle Ajasin
University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) insisted
yesterday that they would not return to work,
until the Federal Government resolves the issues. This was contrary to a report that the
management was already consulting with the
striking lecturers on the need to call back the
students by end of this month. The union urged Vice-Chancellor Prof. Femi
Mimiko to toe the path of rule of law and refrain
from any desperate act of self-help in his attempt
to reopen the university. In a statement by their counsel, Mr. Charles
Titiloye, the union noted with great concern the
threat by the vice-chancellor to re-open the
University for academic activities, despite of the
strike. The union warned that it would not allow
contract lecturers or newly employed graduate
fellows to be used to resume teaching in the
school.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Thursday
gave a two-week ultimatum to the Federal
Government and the Academic Staff Union of
Universities, ASUU, to resolve the strike
embarked upon by university lecturers since 1
July. The NUT President, Mr Michael Olukoya, gave the
ultimatum in Abuja at the end of the union’s
meeting with teachers’ representatives across
the country. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that
ASUU, had on July 1, embarked on a strike it
described as “comprehensive, total and
indefinite”. The lecturers are protesting the non-

Mobile communication (GSM) attracted users in no
small number, to the extent that it was regarded
as “General Street Madness” in some parts of the country. Also, social network like Facebook, Twitter, 2go
etc came along; trust Nigerians, they joined the
trend as if Nigeria invented those social websites. But the problem is that Nigerian users lack
appropriate decorum for utilising any technology

have joined the mad rush to acquire the device. Blackberry is a device that has inbuilt social
network applications that link people from
different geographical areas in a jiffy. You can

(PDA)and portable media player. It is primarily
known for its ability to send and receive instant

swag in town now, especially among girls in
universities. Everybody wants to own a BB phone. In
universities and other institutions, if a girl doesn’t
belong to the “Blackberry clique,” she is no way
a big babe. In the classroom, market, hospital etc,
you either ping or get pinged. It has got to the
extent that many girls become desperate and are ready to go to any length to attain to the
Blackberry clique. To such people, using a
Blackberry is a do-or-die affair, to the extent that
friends abandon friends who don’t have
Blackberry! Because of the desperate rush, the phone has
become pure water because many people now
own . A day can’t goby without you hearing
someone asking for your Blackberry pin. Even in
classrooms, the attention of Blackberry users is
the usually diverted from lectures because of BB chats. Last Monday, I was in the class receiving a lecture
when suddenly we heard a sarcastic laughter
from the back. It was two friends sitting beside
each other pinging themselves about the faded
attire worn by their lecturer. The laughter caught
the attention of the class and it almost got them in trouble. The same thing happened in my hostel two
weeks ago as two friends argued over the
device. In a nutshell, the coming of this device has
exposed the other side of Nigerians and perhaps,
humanity. It now looks as if GSM has just came to
Nigeria. The cost of BIS subscription would not even
deter the youths from using the device that is
gradually derailing them from achieving their
dreams. Instead of wasting time and money on
mundane activities such as BB chats and pinging,
why not focus on research and invention of new things that will be useful in our nation? Our youths are always on the lookout for exotic
things; only God knows the next invention that
would manipulate the cognitive behaviour of the
Nigerian youths and derail them from attaining
their educational aspirations.

NASU Threatens To Go On Strike Next Week
THREE months into the shutting of academic work in the nation’s universities, the non- academic staff of the universities on Tuesday said they would embark on their strike action next week except the government pay the two months’ salary being own them before then. General Secretary, Non-Academic Staff Union of
Educational and Associated Institutions, Mr. Peters
Adeyemi, told journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State,
that members of the union were being forced
into embarking on a strike action by the refusal
of the Federal Government to pay their salaries for August and September. The NASU scribe said, “NASU will start its own
strike next week because we have been
working and government has refused to pay our
salaries. For us, it does not make sense to
continue to keep the system running when we
are not paid our salary. The reason for this is not known to us. “Workers in all federal universities are not paid
their salary right now and that is big challenge.
Government has not paid our salary for August
and as we are talking now, today is September
24, they are effectively owing us two months’
salary and there’s no way we can continue to do this work with empty stomach, while they go
about running around the globe with heavy
stomach.” Adeyemi, who spoke during NASU’s National
Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, said the
union had displayed maturity in handling its
grievances but that the government was pushing
the members to the wall. He said NASU had shied away from joining the
three-month-old strike by the Academic Staff
Union of Universities, though the non-academic
staff had been having their own grouse with the
Federal Government. Adeyemi said the government had not explained
to them why their August and September salaries
were yet to be paid. He said that the union had been reluctant on
embarking on strike since many Nigerians felt
uncomfortable with the incessant strikes in the
nation’s tertiary institutions. He, however, said that members of the union
could not continue to work while being inflicted
with hunger by the non-payment of their
salaries. Adeyemi said, “We we think as Nigerians and
parents, we don’t have to unnecessarily ground
the system. But if you take this our maturity and
level-headedness to mean stupidity, then of
course, we are running out of patience. “Nigerians would have known that we
deliberately did not want this continuous
disruption of academic activities because, of
course, Nigerians are complaining that those of
us in the academic world have continuously
ruined the future of students by going on to many strikes imposed on us by the government. “That is one of the reasons why this time around
we did not want to necessarily go on strike, but
government is pushing us to that point and
Nigerians will have no reason not to understand
our position if we start the strike by next week.”

all. University teachers, under the aegis of ASUU,
have since June 30 embarked on what they

strike in public universities across the country. The lecturers are asking for the implementation
of some aspects of an agreement they jointly
entered into with the Federal Government in
2009. According to Fagge, it is regrettable that the
strike is protracted, and that the decision of ASUU
to remain adamant until its demands are fully met
can seem uncomfortable and worrisome. He said that the industrial action was a sacrifice
needed to salvage the entire economy of the
country. He said, “I sincerely want to call on all concerned,
especially students and parents, to bear with us,
as well as join hands with us in the struggle to
right the wrongs in our education sector once
and for all, for the good of us all and that of the
country. “I know it is quite a difficult time for us but I also
want to state that what we are doing is for our
own good, as well as to ensure that strikes
become rare, as a weapon to get things done in
our system. “We also want to ensure that there is sincerity
and respect for mutual agreements by parties in
order to attain a common goal for the good of
our dear country” Meanwhile, a group, the Registered Trustees of
Golden Women of Integrity and Vision
Association, has dragged ASUU before the
National Industrial Court over the ongoing strike
action. Others listed as defendants in the suit number
NICN/Abj/242/2013 are the ministers of Labour
and Productivity, Education, Finance and Justice,
as well as the Secretary to the Government of the
Federation. In the suit, the plaintiffs are asking the court to
determine whether the strike action embarked
upon by ASUU was not illegal, and whether
members of the union are not bound by the
policy of ‘no-work no-pay’ and therefore not
entitled to their salary during the period of the strike. They also want the court to determine whether
members of the union are entitled to continue to
retain their employment, having abandoned their
work in the universities, and whether or not the
union complied with the mandatory provisions
of sections 4 and 5 of the Trade Dispute Act CAP T8 LFN 2004 before embarking on the strike. Also, the court was asked to determine whether
or not the Minister of Education is not entitled to
determine the employment of the members of the
union since they have abandoned their work in
the universities. In addition, the plaintiffs want the court to
declare that the strike action embarked upon by
ASUU since July 2, 2013, is illegal,
unconstitutional, and null and void; they also
want the court to declare that the strike action is
unlawful and unwarranted in the face of the payment of over N50bn to the union by Federal

PDP Chief Berates Fayemi Over Merger Of Varsities
Ex-Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education and governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, on Tuesday described the merging of the three universities in the state by the Governor Kayode Fayemi administration as a “disservice to Ekiti people.” Adeyeye, who is also a former spokesman of the
pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, is a PDP
governorship aspirant in the state. He spoke at
Efon-Alaaye during his tour of Efon, Ijero and
Ekiti West local government areas. Noting that the state was financially capable to
fund more than three universities, he said he
would establish more tertiary institutions in the
state if elected as governor. Adeyeye, who described education as the major
industry of Ekiti State, queried, “If the PDP
government that established the University of
Education, Ikere; and University of Science and
Technology, Ifaki-Ekiti was funding the two
institutions, including the University of Ado-Ekiti successfully, why would any government merge

funding?” He promised to establish a tertiary institution in

ASUU Vows To Continue Strike!
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
has blamed the rot in the Nigerian university
system on the Executive Secretary of the National
University Commission, Julius Okojie, saying his
failure to insist on quality has bastardised
Nigerian universities. The lecturers also vowed to continue their strike
unless the federal government honours the 2009
agreement it had with the union. In a statement signed by its University of Ibadan
branch chairman, Olusegun Ajiboye, ASUU
renewed its call for the scraping or a total
overhaul of the regulatory institution if the nation
wishes to get it right in university education
management. While calling on the National Assembly to beam
its searchlight on the activities of the NUC, Mr.
Ajiboye said the recent NEEDS assessment report
on universities reflects how much the
commission has failed in its duties as a regulator. According to him, the report undertaken by
genuine academics contradicts NUC’s
accreditation exercises which gave
‘controversial’ clean bill of health to most
universities through “magomago accreditation.” The union contended that only in a society like
Nigeria would Mr. Okojie still remain in office
after being heavily indicted in the report, saying
“in sane climes, the NUC boss ought to have
resigned through the revelations made in the
NEEDS assessment report.” Mr. Okojie had, last week, absorbed his
commission of any wrongdoing in the rot
plaguing public universities in the country,
particularly as regards undeserved accreditation,
blaming members of the ASUU instead. Mr. Ajiboye, who described the statement
credited to the NUC boss as ‘careless’, accused Mr.
Okojie of using his cronies who can do his
biddings to embark on accreditation. He said the success of the 2011 elections was
based on the patriotic zeal and contributions of
genuine and patriotic ASUU members nationwide
saying that was why the election was free of
hanky-panky recorded in past elections. The ASUU statement titled ‘Where Okojie Got It
Wrong,’ insisted that the NUC boss is fond of
using his ‘yes sir’ boys to do hatchet jobs during
accreditations, thereby compromising quality
most of the time. The union said its almost three-month-old strike
is fully on, adding that the it would not allow
itself to be fooled again with ‘promisory notes’ of
the federal government which had never
worked in the past. “ASUU cannot be blamed for NUC ‘magomago’
accreditations. Rather than blaming the Union,

fraudulent deeds in the NUC, including the work
and eat accreditations. “The NUC knows the kind of academics they

activities of the NUC. “The Education Committees in both the Senate
and House of Representatives have an arduous
task to do here. Nigerians are calling for
dismantling of an omnibus body that has done
the country more harm than good. NUC must go. “Professor Julius Okojie cannot absolve himself
from the rot in the university system by
regulating quantity instead of ensuring quality
delivery,” ASUU said.
ASUU Blasts NUC, Says Strike Continues
The Academic Staff Union of Universities said the existence of the National Universities Commission has not brought improvement to the standard of education in the country. The union also said that it would not call off the
strike because of the mere promise made by the
Federal Government to provide revitalization
fund for the university system. ASUU also called on the National Assembly to
investigate the activities of NUC with a view to
determining the continued relevance or
otherwise of the university supervisory body. If found irrelevant, ASUU said it should be
scrapped. Chairman of ASUU, University of Ibadan chapter,
Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, who spoke in Ibadan
noted that the NUC boss, Prof. Julius Okojie, had
concentrated the effort of the university
regulatory body on quantity rather than quality
while issuing accreditation to universities. Ajiboye said, “Okojie should take full
responsibility for all his deeds in the NUC.
Nigerians should be proud of ASUU in its efforts
at repositioning public universities in the
country.” The union leader added that the result of the
assessment exercise of NUC carried out by the
National Economic Empowerment Development
Strategy should be used to judge the relevance of
NUC and its leader rather than the self-assessment
of the regulatory agency. He said some of the accreditation's granted by
NUC were enmeshed in controversy, wondering
why the National Assembly had not taken action
on the controversies surrounding the
accreditation's so far recorded. He said, “One of the efforts of ASUU to reposition
education in the country is the NEEDS Assessment
document. This was a product of a rigorous
academic exercise carried out by dependable and
credible members of our union. Unlike the
numerous faulty accreditation reports which had given these universities clean bill of health, the
NEEDS Assessment Report stands out as a classical
document of reference detailing the rot and
decay in public universities in Nigeria. “All well meaning Nigerians can see the contrast
between Okojie’s packaged accreditation reports
and a credible job done by ASUU. It has become
very clear from the assessment document that
Okojie and his people have fooled this country

It Right Foundation, has appealed to the Federal
Government and ASUU to work hard and resolve
the lingering crisis that has shut down the
education sector. In a statement on Sunday, President and National
Coordinator of the foundation, Mr. Dixon Jubril,
called on the university lecturers to give room for
re-opening of the universities in the interest of
the students. “It has become a burden on both the government
and ASUU to save the education sector from
collapse by finding a common ground for the
amicable resolution of the crisis. What both
parties to the dispute must have in mind is that
while the situation lingers it is the future of the students that is at stake. “We call on ASUU in particular to shift ground a
bit for the common good of the education
system. It’s our belief that the time has come for
ASUU to devise other means of settling its
disputes with government instead of the
constant disruption of academic activities with its attendant socio-economic implications.

The above mentioned songs were banned because of its lyrics {20 man shall fall that day i you cross my lane.....back to the mattrt open and close} . That of man of the year by phyno was because the lyrics says{oburu na okwero i ba ite ya vasline whics means if e no gree enta make you rub am vasline}.
NBC claims that the lyrics were too sexually explicite and should not be aired aon radio and TV stations in Nigeria.

Fall of Nigerian education
Over 200,000 Nigeria students studying in Ghanian university are reported to expend over #100 billion annually as tuition outside sundry fees. This situation arouse because official figures showing that out of 1.7million Nigerian official figures seeking admission into institutions of higher learning,only 500,000 find placement leaving many with no other option but to seek admission in Ghana.
